New Belgium Brewing & Alpine Beer Co. – Super IPA

New Belgium Alpine Beer Super IPAColorado’s New Belgium Brewing took the DC metro area by storm in 2011, and have continued to impress local craft beer connoisseurs.

For their Lips of Faith series, New Belgium has teamed up with various other craft breweries.

New Belgium worked with California’s  Alpine Beer Co. to bring us this “Super IPA”. Columbus, Simcoe, Amarillo and Centennial hops combine with Pale, c-80, Leanoidin, Acidulated and Carapils malts to create a powerful hop dominate IPA. At 9% ABV this is an IPA that commands respect!

The brewers describe the flavor as “Bitter and boozy baby! The malt sweetness tries so hard just to brush against the hop bitterness without countering its cause in this Super IPA!” The folks at tend to agree, rating Super IPA as “exceptional” with a score of 92 points.

Bodegas Volver – Paso A Paso Tempranillo

Paso A Paso Tempranillo

Tempranillo is a black grape, native to Spain, where it is popular for making red wine. The name is taken from the Spanish for “early”, in reference to it ripening weeks before other red grapes in the region.

Paso A Paso Tempranillo comes from Bodegas Volver, a winery in the best terrain Spain’s La Mancha region has to offer. According to the winemaker: “careful vineyard selections, long, slow fermentation and macceration followed by gentle aging for six months in French oak combine to create a wine with the optimum balance of fruit, spices and robust aromas.”

Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar rates 2010 Paso A Paso Tempranillo 90 pts, describing it as having “fresh redcurrant and cherry flavors, very good energy with a long, spice-accented finish…A remarkable value.”

Stone Brewing Co. – Russian Imperial Stout

Imperial Stout has its origins in 18th century London, where this strong dark beer was brewed for export the courts of Russian Czars. Since 2000, Stone Brewery Co. in California has been brewing an Imperial Russian Stout in this “authentic historical style.” The brewery describes the beer as “Intensely aromatic (notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness and alcohol) and heavy on the palate.” They say this Imperial Russian Stout, ” goes where few can – and fewer dare even try. The style originated from Czarist Russia’s demand for ever thicker English stouts. Expect our version of this mysterious brew to pour like Siberian crude and taste even heavier!”

Stone’s Imperial Russian Stout is a customer favorite at Village Beer and Fine Wine. We do our best to keep it in stock, along with a selection of other beers from Stone Brewing Co. If  you enjoyed the Pesto Crusted Salmon from Cakebread Cellars we posted in September, this month we bring you Sam the Cooking Guy at Stone Brewery, courtesy of Stone’s YouTube Channel. The video opens with a brief summary of the brewing process, from Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Company CEO.
