Ridge Vineyards 1990 Monte Bello

Our featured wine for March is for our vintage collectors. A 1990 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello.

Ridge Vineyards is a California winemaker with multiple locations in northern California. The Monte Bello vineyard dates back to 1892. After a period of inactivity during prohibition, the vineyard was replanted in 1949. The first Ridge Monte Bello was produced in 1962. This Monte Bello that we are proud to feature this month, is a 1990.

In 1993 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated the the 1990 Monte Bello 93 points, recognizing “considerable promise” that would require “considerable patience.” Nine years later Wine Spectator awarded the vintage 97 points.

“An immense wine of uncommon depth, richness, concentration and complexity. Beautifully structured, tightly focused, with layers of currant, tar, earth, anise, mineral and sage, finishing in long, lingering aftertaste.” -Wine Spectator

But you don’t have to choose a collector vintage to pick up a highly rated bottle of wine. Our shelves are stocked with wines scoring 90 points and above, including: Albe Barolo, Volver Tempranillo, Seghesio Zinfandel, Beronia Rioja, Juan Gil, Ridge Three Valley, Rio Madre Rioja and many more.

Schlafly Beer Tasmanian IPA

Schlafly Beer is made by the Saint Louis Brewery, which claims to be the largest locally owned independent brewer in the state of Missouri. The Schlafly Taproom, the origin of Schlafly Beer, claims to be the first new brewpub to open in the state since Prohibition. But enough brewery background, how’s the beer?

This month we are excited to feature Schlafly Beer’s Tasmanian IPA. True to its name, this IPA is based entirely around a particular Australian hop. The beer maker notes:

“Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety…Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.”

The beer scores incredibly well in the online beer community, with an average score of 95 out of over 800 ratings on BeerAdvocate, and a whopping 99 from the folks at RateBeer.

Port City Brewing Company – Monumental IPA

In January 2011, the Port City Brewing Company set out to revive and continue the tradition of brewing in Alexandria, Virginia. Port City is the first production brewery to operate in Alexandria since the Robert Portner Brewing Company shuttered its doors in 1915 due to Prohibition. Portner had been brewing since 1866, and at one time was the largest brewery in the southern United States.

Port City’s locally hand-made craft beers have won many awards. This month we are proud to feature Port City Monumental IPA, a gold medal winner of the 2012 Virginia Craft Brewers Festival and Bronze recipient at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado.

Monumental IPA is brewed with a special blend of American hops, which are added throughout the brewing and fermentation process. According to the brewery, this helps to “create a complex combination of aroma and flavor”.

This “intensely hoppy” IPA weighs in at 6.3% ABV and 57IBU.
