Martin Ray Sonoma County Pinot Noir – 2016

MartinRayPinotThe current Martin Ray Vineyards and Winery was born when it’s founder stumbled on a warehouse full of wines from the orignal Martin Ray winery. Martin Ray operated from 1943 through 1972, and was known for making single  varietal wines in the Santa Cruz area.

This Sonoma County Pinot Noir carries on that single varietal tradition, and with the detailed vintage notes to go along with it. According to the winemaker, the grapes for this 2016 vintage saw ideal growing conditions. After a careful fermentation, this Pinot Noir is aged in oak barrels for 11 months.

The winemaker’s tasting notes include:

“freshly macerated raspberry, cherry bramble, and spicy cola,…a subtle touch of nutmeg….with hints of creamy vanilla.”

James Suckling awarded Martin Ray Sonoma County Pinot Noir an impressive score of 94 points, describing it as a “subtle and rich pinot with dried-cherry and strawberry character.”

Maine Beer Company – Peeper & MO

maine-beer-coFor our September craft beer feature, we managed to get a supply of two selections from Maine Beer Company, of Freeport, Maine. These beers can be tough to find. Behind the understated labels is some exceptional brew.

Peeper is the flagship of the brewery, the original recipe that started it all. Peeper is a Pale Ale brewed with a careful assortment of 3 varieties of hops and 4 types of malt. Maine Beer Co.’s tasting notes include light citrus, berries and pine.

Peeper consistently scores high on Beer Advocate, currently sitting at over a 4/5 score. – 5.5% ABV

MO is another Pale Ale,  with a different assortment of hops and four types of malts, including Caramel 40L and Red Wheat. The brewery tasting notes include “zesty citrus, passion fruit, pine, subtle malt sweetness.”

MO consistently scores high on Beer Advocate too. As of this post MO has a whopping 4.29/5 score. – 6.0% ABV
