Stone Brewing Co. – Russian Imperial Stout

Imperial Stout has its origins in 18th century London, where this strong dark beer was brewed for export the courts of Russian Czars. Since 2000, Stone Brewery Co. in California has been brewing an Imperial Russian Stout in this “authentic historical style.” The brewery describes the beer as “Intensely aromatic (notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness and alcohol) and heavy on the palate.” They say this Imperial Russian Stout, ” goes where few can – and fewer dare even try. The style originated from Czarist Russia’s demand for ever thicker English stouts. Expect our version of this mysterious brew to pour like Siberian crude and taste even heavier!”

Stone’s Imperial Russian Stout is a customer favorite at Village Beer and Fine Wine. We do our best to keep it in stock, along with a selection of other beers from Stone Brewing Co. If  you enjoyed the Pesto Crusted Salmon from Cakebread Cellars we posted in September, this month we bring you Sam the Cooking Guy at Stone Brewery, courtesy of Stone’s YouTube Channel. The video opens with a brief summary of the brewing process, from Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Company CEO.

Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay & Sauvignon Blanc

Jack Cakebread founded his first vineyard in 1973, producing 157 cases of Chardonnay. Today Cakebread Cellars owns 982 acres spread over 13 sites throughout the Napa Valley and more recently, a site in Anderson Valley.

Village Beer & Fine Wine is proud to carry Cakebread Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The wine maker feels that the Napa Valley is “ideal for cultivating Chardonnay.” Cakebread feels the varied terrain of southern Napa allows them to “craft a rich, elegantly structured Chardonnay that drinks beautifully on release, but ages well in bottle.”

The winemaker notes: “Our 2011 Napa Valley Chardonnay opens with fresh, creamy aromas of ripe pear, apple and citrus, with light butter, yeast and spicy oak tones adding complexity.  The wine’s rich, focused, green apple, melon and guava flavors are nicely balanced by fresh acidity and a piquant mineral tone.”

Cakebread describes their  2011 Sauvignon Blanc as “wonderfully fresh and aromatic, with bright scents of pink grapefruit, gooseberry, melon and green apple.  On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with rich, vibrant citrus (grapefruit and kiwi), honeydew melon, spice and mineral flavors balanced by excellent acidity and a long, refreshing, mineral/chalky finish reminiscent of a fine White Bordeaux. ”

Cakebread Cellars posts recipes on their You Tube channel regularly that they feel are good pairings for their wines. This month Cakebread features a Pesto Crusted Salmon by Chef Philippe Boulot of the Heathman Hotel in Portland, Oregon.
