2009 Falesco Merlot, Italy

Our featured wine this month is a Merlot from Italy. Brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella of Falesco Winery, say they “have always paid attention to Merlot as we are convinced that few other territories can allow this variety to express its potential.” They feel that their vineyards “in the hills around Orveito”, in southwestern Umbria, are especially suited to the task.

According to the winery “Falesco Merlot, which is aged for six months in small French oak barrels, has a very deep colour. The scents are wide, rich, soft and spicy and the aromas are noble, well balanced and harmonious with an extremely long lingering finish.”

Wine Advocate scores the 2009 Falesco Merlot 92 points. Calling it “one of the finest wines I have ever tasted from Falesco. It is a decidedly firm, vibrant Merlot that stands in stark contrast to the super-ripe, obvious Vitiano Rosso. Here the fruit is wonderfully precise and elegant. Jammy blueberries, blackberries, cinnamon, leather and crushed rocks are woven into a beautiful fabric. The French oak is layered very nicely, adding depth and flavor, but never overpowering the wine.”

Oskar Blues – Deviant Dale’s Pale Ale

Its been ten years since Oskar Blues became the first US craft brewer to can its own beer, using a table top machine, sealing one beer at a time. They’ve come a long way, expanding their brewery this year, raising their production capabilities to 300 cans a minute.

Oskar Blues has also added a new beer to their line-up of canned craft beers, Deviant Dale’s India Pale Ale.

The brewery describes this new IPA  (8% ABV, 85 IBUs) as having “aromas of citrus, grapefruit rind and piney resins with a copper ball-of-fire color and inscrutable finish. The 2011 GABF Silver Medal Winner (American IPA Category) is the Devil incarnate with untold amounts of malt and hedonistic Columbus dry-hopping.”

Averaging 4 out of 5, from well over 300 reviews on, and 99/100 from, Deviant Dale’s seems to be pleasing the hop heads.

Not sure about the can? According to Oskar Blues “the modern aluminum can is lined with a water-based coating so beer and metal never touch, there is no exchange of metallic flavor.” Currently, Village Beer and Fine Wine has 4 packs of Deviant Dale’s IPA in 16 oz cans, and Dale’s Pale Ale and Mamas Little Yellow Pils in six packs of 12 oz cans.

Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel

La Chouffe brewery started as a small operation in Belgium in the 1970s. Referred to as the ‘Chouffe Story’, the brewery opened as a hobby, but grew to production by the early 1980s. In late 2006 La Chouffe became part of the Duvel Moortgat Brewery.

The brewer describes Houblon Chouffe as” an ‘Indian Pale ale’ type of beer, with a harmonious balance between a marked bitterness (three types of hops are used to make it) and a pleasant fruitiness. The Houblon Chouffe is unfiltered, and re-fermented in the bottle as well as in the keg.”

Village Beer and Fine Wine has a good supply of 750 ml bottles of Houblon Chouffe. At 9% alc./vol. this is one exciting Belgian IPA!
