Oskar Blues – Deviant Dale’s Pale Ale

Its been ten years since Oskar Blues became the first US craft brewer to can its own beer, using a table top machine, sealing one beer at a time. They’ve come a long way, expanding their brewery this year, raising their production capabilities to 300 cans a minute.

Oskar Blues has also added a new beer to their line-up of canned craft beers, Deviant Dale’s India Pale Ale.

The brewery describes this new IPA  (8% ABV, 85 IBUs) as having “aromas of citrus, grapefruit rind and piney resins with a copper ball-of-fire color and inscrutable finish. The 2011 GABF Silver Medal Winner (American IPA Category) is the Devil incarnate with untold amounts of malt and hedonistic Columbus dry-hopping.”

Averaging 4 out of 5, from well over 300 reviews on BeerAdvocate.com, and 99/100 from RateBeer.com, Deviant Dale’s seems to be pleasing the hop heads.

Not sure about the can? According to Oskar Blues “the modern aluminum can is lined with a water-based coating so beer and metal never touch, there is no exchange of metallic flavor.” Currently, Village Beer and Fine Wine has 4 packs of Deviant Dale’s IPA in 16 oz cans, and Dale’s Pale Ale and Mamas Little Yellow Pils in six packs of 12 oz cans.

Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel

La Chouffe brewery started as a small operation in Belgium in the 1970s. Referred to as the ‘Chouffe Story’, the brewery opened as a hobby, but grew to production by the early 1980s. In late 2006 La Chouffe became part of the Duvel Moortgat Brewery.

The brewer describes Houblon Chouffe as” an ‘Indian Pale ale’ type of beer, with a harmonious balance between a marked bitterness (three types of hops are used to make it) and a pleasant fruitiness. The Houblon Chouffe is unfiltered, and re-fermented in the bottle as well as in the keg.”

Village Beer and Fine Wine has a good supply of 750 ml bottles of Houblon Chouffe. At 9% alc./vol. this is one exciting Belgian IPA!

Andeluna Malbec 2010, Mendoza region, Argentina

Andeluna Cellars is located in the Mendoza region of western Argentina. The winemaker describe their Malbec as an “intense red color with violet tones. With complex aromas of figs and plums. Notes of vanilla, coffee and chocolate given by its aging in French oak barrels.”

Cellar Tracker rates Andeluna’s 2010 Malbec 90 pts. Describing it as “Impressive and powerful, rich fruit and dark chocolate notes. Coffee and mocha on the finish. Full and rich. All in a superb Malbec.”

Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar ranks this Malbec 88 pts. Tanzer’s calls it “a very good value. Bright, full red-ruby. Dark berries, licorice, violet and bitter chocolate on the nose. Juicy and graceful, with noteworthy intensity to the blackberry and spice flavors. This smooth, lively, fruit-driven wine finishes with a broad dusting of tannins and nice lift and length.”
