Enamore for Valentine’s Day

For Valentine’s Day pick up something sexy and Argentinian – Enamore. This provocatively named wine comes from a winery nestled in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, Bodega Renacer.

Enamore is 45% Malbec, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Bonarda and 5% Cabernet Franc. The grapes come from vineyards more than 50 years old, where they are dried on the vine until they lose 30% of their weight, then hand picked. After extended fermentation with indigenous yeast in stainless steel tanks, the wine is moved to new french oak barrels, where it sits for 12 months.

The winemaker’s notes:

Color: Clean and brilliant with ruby red tones

Nose: Presents notes of dried fruit, as well as red fruits like cherry and plum, floral hints with a presence of violet

Mouth: Round and elegant, persistent and well balanced sugar-alcohol-acidity

Wine Advocate gives Enamore 92 pts, describing it as a “full-bodied, layered, sweet and densely packed wine.” Show her (or him) just how “enamored” you are, with this innovative wine from Argentina.

2010 Bodegas Volver Tempranillo

Bodegas Volver’s 2010 Tempranillo is a “single vineyard” wine, meaning that the grapes come from just one vineyard. Located in Spain’s La Mancha region, the vineyard is 72 acres, and was first planted in 1957. Only the finest Tempranillo grapes are hand harvested to make this fine wine. The wine maker notes:

Bright purple, dark berries, cherry pit, licorice and tobacco on the nose. Slowly unfolds to offer sappy cassis and bitter cherry flavours lifted by tangy acidity and complicated by a peppery, spicy quality. Finishes gripping and long, with resonating cherry and spice notes. Give this some aeration or a couple more years of bottle age.

Aged for 14 months in new French oak barrels and bottled unfiltered, this is a lovely Spanish Tempranillo not to be missed.

StephenTanzer’s International Wine Cellar gives this 2010 Tempranillo 91 pts, stating that its “penetrating black raspberry and blueberry flavors  show excellent depth and clarity, with smoky mineral nuances.”

Dogfish Head – Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew

Dogfish Head’s Miles Davis Bitches Brew, was created to honor the influential 1970 jazz fusion album of the same name. Displaying the album’s cover art boldly on the label, Dogfish aspired to match the LP’s “alchemical spirits” and brewed a “fusion of three threads of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root. A bold, dark beer.”

Dogfish Head found Sam Calaglone has a special connection to the album. Sam’s story:

“I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery… You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world.”

The BeerAdvocate “Bros” give Bitches Brew a score of 95, and RateBeer gives it a whopping 99 overall.
