Founders Dank Wood – Imperial Red India Pale Ale aged in bourbon barrels

Founders Brewing Co. continues to come up with great brews that our customers can’t get enough of. This month we’re excited to feature the third release in Founders’ limited barrell aged series – Dank Wood, an Imperial Red India Pale Ale aged in bourbon barrels

Founders describes Dank Wood as the “perfect alchemy of wood and hops”, with tasting notes that include “rich caramel” and a “strong malt character”, with an added complexity from the bourbon barrel-aging.

Beer aficionados seem to agree, with Dank Wood sitting on Beer Advocate currently at over 4 out of 5 points.

Protea Dry Rosé & Cabernet Sauvignon

proteaFor June we’re featuring a pair of wines from South Africa’s Protea Wines, Dry Rosé and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Protea Dry Rosé is made of 63% Mourvedre, 20% Shiraz, 16% Cinsault, 1% Grenache from South Africa’s Darling, Swartland and Wellington regions.

The vineyard describes Protea Dry Rosé  as:

“a vivacious mouthful of juicy strawberry and cherry flavor.”

Protea Cabernet Sauvignon is described by the winemaker’s as:

“A beautiful deep ruby…immediately shows aromatic notes of blackberry, espresso and spice. On the palate the wine is full and juicy.”

Both of these Protea wines come in beautiful clear glass bottles with frosted artwork. Visit the Protea Wines website for ideas on making use of the bottle when you’re finished.

Summer Rosés

bertrand-hecht-roseOur featured wine for May is a pair of fantastic Rosés, perfect for Summer.

From France, we have Hecht and Bannier Côtes de Provence Rosé 2016. If you’re familiar with this wine, the winemaker describes the 2016 vintage as having a more “elegant balance” and lower ABV.

If you’re new to Hecht and Bannier’s Rosés, know that with each vintage, they set out to create a wine that is “pale, fruity and round, soft and well balanced.”

Decanter awarded Hecht and Bannier Rosé 2016 a rating of 92 points.

The second of this month’s pair of Rosés, also from France, is Gerard Bertrand Côtes de Rosé.

Gerard Bertrand’s Rosé is a work of art, both inside and out.Turn the bottle over and you’ll discover an intricate rose design in the glass. A unique and elegant touch.

Inside is a Rosé the winemaker describes as “big and fresh and fruity”.

Victory Brewing Co – Golden & Sour Monkey

We’re featuring two monkeys from Pennsylvania this month, brought to us by Victory Brewing Company.

First up, is Golden Monkey, a Belgian-style Triple. Victory tries to stay true to the style, describing Golden Monkey as having a

“Nose…loaded with Belgian yeast character. Banana, clove, isoamyl. Body is equally fruity with light earthy hop character.”

For this particular beer, Victory recommends trying not to pour out the yeast sediment from the bottle.

Next up, we have Sour Monkey, a Sour Brett Triple, providing a tart twist to the original Golden Monkey. The brewer describes this monkey:

“Aroma is very varied with lemon, sour, and mild brettanomyces notes. Flavor follows with a tart acidity. Not dry as it finishes with a malty grain flavor.

Sour Monkey stands up among the aficionados at Beer Advocate, currently sitting with over a 4 out of 5 rating.
