Unibroue Sommelier Selection

la-resolution-sommelier-selectionUnibroue began brewing beer in Canada in the early 1990s. Within a few years, they had opened subsidiaries in the United States and Europe. In 2006 Japan’s Sapporro International purchased Unibroue, bringing their unique craft brews to an even wider international audience.

The Sommelier Selection includes one bottle 12 oz bottle of six different beers from Unibroue, including one limited release.

La Résolution
This is the limited release of the pack. La Résolution is a spiced ale weighing in at 10%ABV, described by the brewer as have tasting notes of “spicy, toffee caramel and roasted malt”.

La Fin Du Monde
A classic of the Unibrou line, brewed since 1994, La Fin Du Monde is a triple-style golden ale, 9% ABV. Unibrou describes it as “mildly yeasty with a complex palate of malt, fruit and spice notes followed by a smooth, dry finish.

Blanche de Chambly
The lighter selection of the pack, a Belgian white ale, 5% ABV. Consistent with many witbiers, described as tasting of “wheat and subtle spices blanketed in citrus flavors reminiscent of orange and lemon.”

Trois Pistoles
Another high gravity 9% brew, this one in the abbey strong dark ale style. Described as “slightly sweet. Enhanced by accents of roasted malt, cocoa, ripe fruit and dark spices with a smooth finish like an old port.”

Don De Dieu
A unique triple wheat ale, 9% ABV, which the brewer describes as having “smooth, complex flavor that is slightly fruity, malty nutty and yeasty with a  hint of unfiltered sake.”

Maudite
Rounding out the pack we have an 8% ABV strong amber-red ale, another classic Unibroue brew. Tasting notes include “robuts maltiness and spiciness that is counterbalanced by an assertive crisp hop finish.”

Truly a special selection of unique and interesting craft brews!

2013 Silencieux – Venge Vineyards

vengeOur featured wine for November is a 2013 Silencieux, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Venge Vineyards of Napa Valley, California. The Venge family has been making wine since the 1970’s. Today, Venge vintages routinely receive scores over 90 points. Silencieux will surely be no exception when the reviews are in.

Venge describes Silencieux:

“This wine is full bodied and powerful, opening with aromatic anise, scents of sweet cassis, blackberries and smoky coffee that lead to a concentrated and lengthy finish. Approachable upon release, and cellar worthy in proper aging conditions.  Best now through 2025.”
– Venge Vinyards

Silencieux is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Carbernet Franc, 2 % Petit Verdot, and 1% Merlot. The grapes are hand-pciked and processed “gently” creating what the winemaker describes as “fruit caviar”. After a up to just over a month in stainless steel, the wine is aged in French Oak barrels for 18 months. Only 1,295 cases were produced, all of which have already been distributed.

Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino

caparzo-web

Our featured wine comes to us from Italy’s famed Brunello di Montalcino region. Wine from this region is some of Italy’s most renowned, and often most expensive. Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino is more reasonably priced, and considered a top example of the style. The wine is matured for 36 months in Slavonia and French oak barrels, and then bottle aged for another year.

Wine Spectator awarded Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 93 points:

“Cigar box and leather aromas are balanced by strawberry and cherry notes at the core. There is a vibrant, refreshing quality here, with a long, complex aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2033. “

- Wine Spectator

The New York Times recently ran an article on the wines of Brunello di Montalcino. The reviewer described the Caparzo as “beautifully aromatic ” and “well worth checking out.” If you’re not familiar with the region, this a great introduction. And if you are, then you already know, this is one excellent wine.

Jacques Au Lantern – Evolution Craft Brewing Company

jacques-au-lantern-webFor our October beer feature we’ve chosen one of the many Pumpkin brews currently gracing our shelves – Jacques Au Lantern, from Evolution Craft Brewing Company, based in Salisbury, MD. If you ever find yourself on the eastern shore, Evolution is not just a brewery, it’s also a top rated restaurant.

Jacques Au Lantern is an unfiltered amber ale. While it’s brewed with traditional pumpkin pie spices, Evolution adds their own twist, fermenting with a Belgian yeast.

Evolution describes Jacques Au Lantern:

“Our Belgian-inspired pumpkin ale…6.3% abv, unfiltered and a whirlwind of spicy flavors and aromatics. It would take me a while to describe this one…”

If a Belgian style pumpkin beer doesn’t sound like your style, rest assured we’ve got many others to choose from. But don’t wait too long, this year’s crop of pumpkin beers are as popular as ever.
