Vallis Dei Amarone Della Valpolicella 2014

Amarone

This month’s featured wine hails from Italy’s Valpolicella Region, an Amarone from Vallis Dei. Amarone wines are made from partially-dried grapes, resulting in a concentration of sugars and flavors for a unique wine experience.

Amarone tend to be a bit more expensive, as more fruit goes into making each bottle, but this also can result in a higher alcohol percentage.

Vallis Dei offers a reasonably price Amarone if you’ve been interested in giving this style a try.

Samuel Adams Utopias 2017

Utopia2017 Samuel Adams’ Utopias 2017 has arrived, and we only have one of two bottles left. As usual, that’s all we could get our hands on this year.

For those unaware, Utopias has become a Sam Adams tradition, and quantities are always small, with only  13,000 bottles produced in 2017. Utopias is an “extreme barrel aged” beer, similar to a quality port, cognac or sherry.

After a fairly typical brewing, special extreme gravity yeast is added, for continued fermentation. The final result is a brew of 28% ABV.

Utopias is aged in a variety of barrels, including whiskey barrels from Buffalo Trace Distillery and  Ruby Port. The final mix is aged further in moscat barrels.

Due to it’s high alcohol content, Utopias is actually illegal in 12 states, fortunately, the state of Maryland isn’t one of them!

Walnut City Wines – Wine Direct from Oregon

Assortement of Walnut City wine bottlesWe have a special wine feature for October, direct to you from Oregon. So direct in fact, we’re able to cut out the middle man. Walnut City Wineworks produces a small enough quantity to be able to sell directly to our store. This is “wine direct”, which translates to savings for our customers.

Walnut City wines come from their vineyards in Oregon’s popular Williamette Valley. Walnut City manages over 200 acres, totaling over a million vines.

We are currently offering 4 varieties of Walnut City wines:

Pinot Gris –  The winemaker describes as a “deliciously sweet-fruited Pinot Gris.”

Pinot Noir – Tasting notes include “Rich strawberry and blackberry flavors mingle with layers of deep rose, coffee and allspice aromas.”

Reisling – According to the winemaker “is showing incredibly energetic primary fruit, akin to mandarin orange and dried apricot.”

Rosé – Tasting notes include: “Gentle aromas of orange blossom and grapefruit peel mingle with the classic floral and raspberry bramble notes”.

Founders DKML – Imperial Malt Liquor Aged in Bourbon Barrels

founders-dkmlWe’ve been trying to get our hands on this one for awhile. Our distributor finally came through, and we’re proud to offer Founders DKML.

Founders DKML is a release from their barrel-aged series, an “Imperial Malt Liquor Aged in Bourbon Barrels”. Yes, a craft malt liquor.

Founders felt this “slighted” style needed an update, dry hopping and barrel aging to class up this classic style.

Stop by and pick up a 4-pack of DKML bottles while they lost. There’s no telling when we’ll be able to get our hands on more.

Pumpkin Craft Beer 2017

pumpkinbeer2017

Starting to think about pumpkin beer as the seasons shift? We’ve already got a full shelf of pumpkin beers to choose from. While pumpkin beer has become an annual tradition, many brewers do their best to put their unique spin on the style.

  • Southern Tier – Imperial Pumking
An imperial at 8.6% ABV, ST describes this one as “Malty sweetness, vanilla, clove, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, pie crust”.
  • Alltech Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co – Kentucky Pumpkin Barrel Ale
Another big one, weighing in at 10% ABV, brewed with kentucky pumpkins, appropriate spices, and aged in bourbon barrels.
  • Flying Dog – The Fear Imperial Pumpkin Ale
Our local heroes at Flying Dog throw down in the Imperial category as well, with the 9% ABV “The Fear”. Brewed with local pumpkin puree and a “secret blend” of spices, The Fear pours a bit darker than many of it’s peers.
  • Blue Point Brewing Company – Mother Pumpkin Ale
For a milder ale, try Blue Point. Pouring a golden orange, at 5.5% ABV, this one is a bit more sessionable.
  • Dogfish Head – Punkin Ale
Dogfish Head returns with Punkin Ale, brewed with pumpkin meat and brown sugar, striking a nice balance at 7% ABV.
  • Evolution Craft Brewing – Jacques Au Lantern Belgian Pumpkin Ale
Evo brews an unfiltered amber ale for their pumpkin brew, fermented with a belgian yeast strain, for a unique take on the seasonal favorite.
  • The Traveler Beer Co – Jack-o Traveler Pumpkin Shandy
This is the pumpkin beer with the most session potential on our shelves so far. A “shandy-inspired” wheat beer, intended to balance “refreshment and seasonal spice”. 4.4%ABV.
