Schlafly Returns! Kolsch, IPA, Northeast IPA

We’re happy to announce that Schlafly beers are returning to our shelves after a long forced hiatus! First up, we’ve got a couple of IPAs and a Kolsch to get you reacquainted.

Schlafly India Pale Ale – Described as something of a session beer, Schlafly IPA is on the balanced more sessionable side. With a light color and both “citrus and tropical flavors” according to Schlafly’s tasting notes. 5.0% ABV

Schlafly Northeast IPA – This is a limited release, and clearly brewed with the IPA connoisseur in mind. Schlafly uses a unique brewing process of kettle boiling and dry hopping. Schlafly promises a thick head on this unfiltered beer. Weighing in at a hefty 8.0% ABV.

Schlafly Kolsch – An award winning Kolsch, brewed with a fairly ancient yeast of family origins. Schlafly promises the their Kolsch blends malt and fruit with a fresh lager finish. 4.8%ABV

Castra Rubra Butterfly Rock

Castra Rubra Butterfly Rock, our featured wine this month comes to us from the Telish Winery in Bulgaria’s Thracian Lowlands region. The area is in the south of Bulgaria, and known for red wine production, due to a Mediterranean style climate. Butterfly Rock is 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Syrah.

This delicious blend has consistently received professional ratings of 90 points and above. Robert Parker awards Butterfly Rock a 90 pt score, as does Decanter magazine, stating:

“The wood and tannins are well integrated into the dense juicy red fruit.”

Wine Enthusiast awards Butterfly Rock a 91 point score, and comes in at 92 points. Haven’t tried a wine from Bulgaria before? Critics seem to agree, Butterfly Rock is a great place to start.

Woods & Waters IPA and A Tiny Beautiful Something Pale Ale – Maine Beer Co

We’ve got an exciting new pair of brews from Maine Beer Company. As usual, the understated labels hide an exceptional beer inside.

Woods & Waters India Pale Ale is named in honor of the commemoration of Maine’s Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, a national park of over 80,000 acres, including parts of the Penobscot River and views of Katahdin Mountain.

Woods & Waters is brewed with five different varieties of hops, and four malts. Maine Beer Company’s tasting notes for Woods & Water include:

“Melon, pineapple and pink grapefruit. Underlying notes of onion and garlic with subtle pine and a faint malt grain sweetness.”

It seems Maine Beer Co has another hit, with Woods & Waters currently enjoying a 91 pt score on the ever popular Beer Advocate website.

A Tiny Beautiful Something Pale Ale is a different kind of beast entirely, brewed with only El Dorado hops and  four types of malt. Maine Beer Company’s tasting notes include:

“Orange marmalade and apricot with floral perfume notes, spicy and earthy.”

If you’re interested in either of these beers, call ahead. These may go quickly, and availability may be limited.

Vinaceous Snake Charmer Shiraz 2016

vinaceous-snake-charmer-shirazOur featured wine for January is a great choice for cold winter nights. An Australian Shiraz, described by the winemaker as “Deep purple and vivid in color with…lifted aromas of berries and spice. Intense black fruits, dark chocolate and mocha across mid palate.”

Snake Charmer hails from the Pieri Family Vineyard in the McLaren Vale. The region is renowned for growing top quality Shiraz.  Handpicked grapes are fermented in open top tanks, then aged in French and American oak barrels for 14 to 16 months. The bottling and finishing touches of Snake Charmer are handled by Vinaceous.

Wine & Spirits awards 2016 Vinaceous Snake Charmer Shiraz a score of 91 points, describing it as:

“Anise and violets, tangy black olives and salt all combine in this lean Shiraz with plenty of underlying richness. It’s bright and brisk, grounded by red-earth tones in the tannins.”

If you’re looking for a bottle of wine that stands up the winter chill, consider Snake Charmer!
