Tellus Cabernet Sauvignon

TellusOur featured wine for March, Tellus Cabernet Sauvignon, comes from Italy’s Umbria region. This Cabernet Sauvignon is fermented in stainless steel, then aged in “barrique” for six months. These uniquely shaped oak barrels were originally designed for Bordeaux wines.

The winemaker’s tasting notes include:

“Here, the climate is moderate but elevation is also important, so flavors lean to ripe black fruits and tell-tale herbaceous notes.”

James Suckling rates Tellus Cabernet Sauvignon 92 pts, calling it:

A firm, silky cabernet with chocolate and currant aromas and flavors. Full body, fine tannins. Attractive currant, rosebush and almond aftertaste. “

 

 

Quinta de Porrais 2012 Douro

Our featured wine for February comes from Portugals Douro Valley. The Douro is considered by some to have the most beautiful landscapes of any wine country.

Wine Enthusiast awards this Porrais Douro 90 pts. Wine Enthusiast’s European Editor, Roger Voss:

“From vineyards north of the Douro River on the plateau, this wine shows both richness and a fine cool, elegant style. The wood aging has given the wine depth and extra richness, adding to the berry fruits with spice and hints of toast. It’s a wine to drink soon, full of fruit and balanced tannins. Drink from 2017.”

Tinazzi Corvina di Verona Selezione di Famiglia 2015

corvina-veronaOur featured wine for January comes to us from Italy’s Tinazzi family. The Tinazzi have been making wine in the Veneto region since the 1960s.

This Corvina di Verona is a “Selezione di Famiglia”. This wine is an entirely made from the  Corvina Veronese grape. Tinazzi Corvina di Verona is aged in French and American oak barrels for six months to a year.

Tinazzi describes Corvina di Verona:

“Color: Deep bright red

Aroma: Ample and harmonious, ranging from red fruits to spices

Taste: Velvety, persistent and full, with great harmony “
The wine maker suggests serving with all types of meat and aged cheeses.

Argiano Brunello Di Montalcino – 2011

argiano-brunelloOur featured wine for December, Argiano Brunello Di Montalcino, comes from one of Tuscany’s top wine producers. A region, which itself, is one of the top wine producers in Italy. Tuscany is known for Sangiovese. Argiano is confident that any fan of Sangiovese will love Brunello Di Montalcino.

This impressive wine goes through a meticulous aging process, spending one year in French oak barrels, and another in Slavonian oak barrels. After maturing in wood, the wine is then aged in concrete tanks at specifically controlled temperatures.

Robert Palmer’s Wine Advocate, and James Suckling, both rate Brunello Di Montalcino a score of 93 pts.

Wine Advocate notes the obvious care put into the production:

“This is a balanced and forthcoming wine that puts equal emphasis on primary aromas of fresh berry and secondary aromas of oak spice and smoke. The two components suggest careful work in both the vineyard and the winery in what was not always an easy vintage.

The winemaker and critics agree, Brunello Di Montalcino is an excellent wine to drink now, or hold on to for many years to come.

 

Volte Face Vinho Branco and Reserva

nov-wine-webOur featured wines for November, the mysterious Volte Face, comes from the Alentejano region of Portugal.

The first of this pair, Volte Face Vinho Branco, was featured in the Washington Post. Vinho Branco is made from Antaõ Vaz, one of the most sought after grapes in the region.
The Washington Post rates Vote Face Vinho Branco “Excellent”, with tasting notes that include:

“Flavors of white flowers and talc are backed up by rich textures of lanolin and beeswax. Delicious. There is also an excellent red at the same price.”

That “excellent red” is Volte Face Reserva, our second featured wine for the month. Volte Face Reserva is what’s known as a rare red blend.

Either of these wines will pair well with your Thanksgiving turkey or ham.

Terra Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon – Thorn Clark Barossa Winemakers

Our featured wine for October is a wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia. The 2013 Terra Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon from Thorn Clark Barossa Winemakers. This family owned operation has been around for six generations.

Thorn Clark have a reputation for high quality affordable wines, and Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon is no exception. The wine maker describes this wine:

“A varietal palate with primarily dark berry fruit characters and dried herbs. French oak spice adds to the complexity of the wine. The palate has long elegant tannins which balance the fruit and oak weight well. “

Terra Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon has been rated highly, including a 91 pt score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Their note’s include:

 “Aged in French oak, it reveals leafy black currant notes intermixed with wood, damp earth, and spice. This supple-textured, delicious red is best consumed in its exuberant youth … over the next 2-4 years.”

Voiles de Saint Tropez Rosé

lesvoilesOur featured wine for September is a spectacular Rosé from the Côtes de Provence of France. Wines of this region are typically considered some of the best of the Mediterranean region.

Don’t let the pink color fool you. The winemaker describes this Rosé as:

“A powerful wine with fresh aromas of citrus fruit, flowers, and spices.”

Voiles de Saint Tropez Rosé is made up of Grenache and Cinsault grapes. The winemaker goes to great lengths to emphasize that making Rosé is both an “art and a science.” The claim three factors are key: the selection of the grapes, consistent cold temperature through the entire process, and the duration of contact between juice and skin.

Supplies are likely to be limited, so don’t wait to0 long to give this one a try. Particularly if you’re already a fan of Rosé.
